This site follows the build of the 1:8 scale model of the 'Royal Chester' general purpose traction engine based on the design published by the late Bill Hughes. This particular model has become a favorite throughout the model engineering community as the drawings and casting are readily available and as such there has been hundreds of examples built over the years. That said, this project is a formidable challenge to whoever may take it on mainly due to the fine detail required to create the parts true to the drawings and in many cases the complexity is exaggerated by the need to do this in miniature. In fact, it has been said that the would-be builder many well need to invest some 2000 hours to result in a finished example, however, in practice this may well be a vast underestimation.
The plan is for this content to serve as a record of the build process and describe some of the steps taken to construct the various parts, the site will develop as the project does and the content will be updated to suit. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please get in touch. Enjoy!
